Education

  • BA – St. Anselm College
  • MBA – University of Hartford

John O'Leary has taught a wide variety of courses in business, economics, strategy and international business at both the undergraduate and graduate levels for the University of Hartford, University of Denver, Goodwin University and Post University. His interests include renowned automobile restorer Gustav Reuter (Reuter's Coach Work in the Bronx, NY and Ridgefield, Conn.), famed collector James Melton (Melton Museum in Norwalk, Conn. and James Melton Autorama in Hypoluxo, FL) and the saga of the Mercedes-Benz 540K 'Aktion P' (chassis # 408377) from WWII. As the archivist for Reuter's Coach Works, he provides answers to private individuals and assists companies such as RM Sotheby's, Bonhams and Bloomberg Intelligence with research on investment-quality automobiles in the global automotive scene.

Henry Austin Clark Jr.'s Vision

Located at 315 Country Road 39 in Southampton, NY, the Long Island Automotive Museum opened in late August of 1948. The museum was founded and operated by Henry Austin Clark, Jr. until it closed in 1980.

'Austie' Clark selected the adept hands of Gus Reuter (Reuter's Coach Works in the Bronx, NY) to restore the automobiles in his world class assemblage including the 1933 Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow.

Clark's objective in planning his collection was to include cars that represent all-important milestones in automobile development, as well as representative types of American and foreign cars.

The Survival of a Mercedes-Benz 540K from WWII

In the summer of 1942, during the height of World War II, an assassination attempt was made on SS-ObergruppenfΓΌhrer Reinhard Heydrich. As a result, the German government ordered Daimler-Benz to produce twenty bulletproof sedans (supercharged 540K models) called AKTION P (P for panzer, or armored vehicle) for increased security.

The AKTION P cars were assigned to high-ranking Nazi's (Kaltenbrunner, Speer) as well as the motor pools in both Munich and Berlin. They were a fantastic blend of power and elegance, and their rarity soon made them legendary. Some consider the 540K model a masterpiece of the coachbuilder and the high point of Mercedes-Benz own 'Special Vehicle Production Unit'. Today, Mercedes-Benz 540K automobiles are held in esteemed collections as centerpieces and rarely come to market.

Until 1992, the only other known AKTION P from WWII is chassis # 408417 designated to K.H. Frank that resides in the National Technical Museum in Prague, Czech Republic.

Richard Reuter (O'Leary's father-in-law) was part of a trio of Connecticut residents that acquired the AKTION P (chassis #408377) in Tallinn, Estonia, from Hindrek Kukk in exchange for an education in the United States for his daughter back in the 1990s.
